Breast reduction and reshaping may also be chosen by middle aged women who wish to improve the shape and size of their sagging breasts that are common after pregnancy and childbirth.

Surgical Procedure

Breast reduction surgery also called mammoplasty operation is usually done in the operative set up in the hospital. Before surgery the surgeon may take photos of the breasts and measure them. During this time, the surgeon will discuss how much breast tissue should be removed to achieve the desired results.

Patient is usually rendered unconcious using general anesthesia. The surgery usually takes around 3 to 5 hours. If the reduction attempted is smaller the area of the operation may be numbed using a local anesthetic injection alone. Usually breast reduction is accompanied by a breast lift or mammopexy.

In case a breast lift is performed along with reduction, some of the excess skin is removed around the areola.

After cleaning the area of the operation the surgeon puts an incision over the skin and tissues of the breast. Within the incision excessive tissues of the breast are reduced. The nipple and the areola around it may also be reshaped or repositioned. In case a breast lift is performed along with reduction, some of the excess skin is removed around the areola. The rest of the skin is pulled together to tighten and raise the breast. Once the operation is performed a drain or a small tube is placed within the incision site and stitched. The tube helps to drain excess blood or fluid at the operative site. The area is bandaged and the breasts are supported by special surgical bra. Stitches may be removed in 1 to 2 weeks.

Post operative recovery & considerations

Pain is one of the commonest complications after surgery. It lasts for the initial few days and then is replaced by a milder discomfort. Medicine can help relieve the pain. For the initial month there may be some swelling and/or bruising. The surgical bra is to be worn for 24 hours to reduce the swelling, provide support and help heal the incision.

Normal activities may be resumes within a couple of weeks, unless those activities involve strenuous activity or exercise. A sports bra or athletic bra needs to be worn for a few months after surgery for good support. Some scars may be present over the breast but these usually fade away with time.
